History of
Sigma Lambda Alpha Sorority, INC.
Epsilon Chapter

In the fall of 1997, Renee Flores took the initiative to attend a meeting with Michelle Lopez, an advisor in the Student leadership and Activities office, to form a Latina sorority at The University of Texas at San Antonio.
The Epsilon chapter, at The University of Texas at San Antonio, was established in the spring of 1998. Renee Flores and Ana Rodriquez recruited three other women: Sally Garza, Jessica Rivera, and Irma Sigala. These five women envisioned their sorority to be a place where they would address the subject matter of women, education, and the community. Sigma Lambda Alpha Sorority held all the ideals of an organization that offered women, with similar goals, to unite with integrity and pride.
As the semester progressed, so did the number of interested women. These extraordinary women, met all the necessary requirements that were needed, to become a sorority. The first pledge class for the newest colony of Sigma Lambda Alpha were inducted on August 23, 1998.

History of Sigma Lambda Alpha
Sigma Lambda Alpha, also known Senoritas Latinas en Accion was established at Texas Women's University. In the summer of 1992, Angeles Gonzales, a student at Texas Woman's University, read an article in Hispanic magazine about a national Hispanic sorority called Sigma Lambda Upsilon/ Senoritas Latinas Unidas at the University of Pennsylvania. Angeles became extremely interested and wrote to the sorority for more information regarding their organization. She received a response immediately which suggested that she begin an interest group, elect officers and choose an organizational name to start the sorority process. With the help of the Office of Student Government Angeles, began the process required to become a sorority. In 1992, Angeles began recruiting girls to be "founding mothers", in the sorority and to attend the first meeting. In the interest meeting they discussed the foundation of their organization and the name, they also elected officers. The women worked hard throughout the fall semester to establish a solid ground in which they would be able to induct their first pledge class. In the spring of 1993 the first pledge class was inducted at a ceremony were each member took part in the traditions of Sigma Lambda Alpha Sorority.
